FAQ

Q: How to create maps on Desktop computer (works till  0.2.0)

A:

For creating Offline maps on PC is absolute perfect application Mobile Atlas Creator. I’ll not describe here how to work with this software, but I’ll tell what to do, to create maps for Locus, which is not in output list.

  • First step, in Settings -> Map size -> Maximum size – choose biggest value. All map tiles have to be in one big tar! (screenshot 1)
  • Important is output format. Set it to TrekBuddy tared atlas.
  • Choose area and start creating (screenshot 2).
  • After map creating, only thing to do is copy all tar map files, into one directory, so in my example, I created directory Europe OSM, and into this (as on screenshot 3), I copied all tar files created by Atlas Mobile Creator.
  • Whole directory copy into /sdcard/Locus/maps and start application (you have to wait for a a while (up to few minutes with 1GB file) to initialize all map files). Enjoy

Warning: highly suggest not to download files bigger then 1GB (may cause Out of memory errors on machines with lower Java application memory) !!!

Q: How to add new map provider from Online maps menu

A:

  • Choose Online maps, from menu you have two choises.
  • First is for direct insert syntaxed string for map providers.
  • Second is much easier, it allow you to import *.txt file containing all custom providers together (on every single line, one provider).

Syntax example:
0;OSM;Classic;8;25;256;http://tile.openstreetmap.org/;@Z@/@X@/@Y@.png;@Z@-8
0;Google;Classic;8;25;256;http://mt1.google.com/vt/v=w2.95&hl=en;&x=@X@&y=@Y@&z=@Z@;@Z@-8

where

  • 0 (zero) – type of map provider, 0 means classic Mapnik server (OSM, Google maps, Cycloserver, …), 1 is prepared for Yahoo servers and 2 for Microsoft maps.
  • OSM – name od provider
  • Classic – little description
  • 8 – minimum zoom
  • 25 – maximum zoom
  • 256 – size of tiles in pixel
  • http://tile… - base url for tiles which don’t change with requests
  • @Z@/@X@/@Y@.png – syntax for tiles, where @X@ and others will be replaced for X, Y coordinates and Zoom
  • @Z@-8 – syntax for recompute correct zoom value for request. This value is usually *Zoom – minimum zoom* but should be different.

Now you know syntax of providers, so you should add your custom ones. Share links with others and enjoy … ;)

TIP: if you have some use-full provider, write me and I will add it into application permanently

    great application!
I hope there is a way we can download offline maps using PC and then transfer it to phone.
Adding markers/waypoints/flags can be great as well, point A, point B… etc.
we’ll be looking forward the next update.

you can dl from pc and put into ur phone

the only thing i encounter is Mobile Atlas Creator not locus, Map should have let us filter away certain parts rather then selecting whole box with unwanted map to be downloaded.
